Voters authorize planned fire truck sale

With the public's approval - an 80-0 final tally - the fire district can now go out on its own to solicit bids for the aging truck.
East Meadow fire officials said departments in other states, including North Carolina, have already expressed interest in the 1991 Pierce model, a 100-foot rear-mounted tower-ladder truck with portable ladders.
The East Meadow Fire District will replace the older vehicle with a new $1.1 million truck that it has already purchased.
Officials said the district was offered a trade-in value of $155,000 for the older truck, but that they prefer to solicit other bids to start at a minimum value of $160,000.
Money from the sale of the 1991 Pierce will be applied to the financing of the new vehicle, officials said.
The East Meadow Board of Fire Commissioners meets on the second and third Monday of each month at 8:30 p.m. in headquarters on 197 East Meadow Avenue.
