Railroad officials identified the young woman as Lyla Stern, who, according to knowledgeable sources, attended Calhoun High School. Officials could not say why Stern was on the tracks. According to a published report, the LIRR engineer pulled the emergency brake to try and avoid hitting her, but could not stop the train in time. Subsequent trains in and out of the Merrick station were delayed by up to a half-hour. Officials said they do not suspect foul play. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
