Blood drive hosted by the East Meadow Public Library.
The library's drive will be on Thursday, Jan. 29 from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. To make an appointment, visit the Public Relations office, or call (516) 794-2570 ext. 560.
Free income tax help
Tax time is coming up. The library has two experts coming in with tax tips and ways to save which will help you prepare your own tax returns. In addition, the library will again be offering free tax preparation by AARP volunteers. Please bring last year's tax return and any new forms you received through the mail. The Library has a selection of forms. AARP will have tax consultants at the Library to help you prepare your tax returns Monday, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 12 to 4 p.m. beginning Feb. 2 through April 14.
IRS trained students from Hofstra will be at the library on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning on Feb. 7 through April 11.
There will also be a slate of guest speakers appearing at the library to give information on how to prepare tax returns. Note that the following speakers will not help prepare your taxes at the library: Mark Silverstein of H & R Block will be at the library with tax preparation advice on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 12:30 p.m. Jack Lisack, formerly of the IRS, will give you the latest information for doing this year's taxes on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 12:30 p.m.
Homebound services
at the East Meadow Public Library. Did you know that you do not have to give up the Library if you are confined to your home? It is true. The library will come to you. Community Services Librarian, MaryEllen Fosso, will fill your requests and bring them to your home. Can't decide what you want to read, what DVD, or what CD, you would like? Ms. Fosso will make some choices and deliver them to your home for you. In order to get the Homebound Service, you must have a doctor's note. Call Ms. Fosso at 794-2570 ext. 216 for information and an application.

Fundraiser for Michael Sullivan
At Mulcahy's of Wantagh on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. The event benefits the Michael Hurry Home Fund, established for Michael Sullivan, an East Meadow resident and New York City police officer who continues to rehabilitate from serious injuries after being struck by a car while off-duty in 2006. The fund was established with the goal of Sullivan returning home to continue his rehabilitation in hope of eventually returning to the police force. East Meadow Civic Association and American Community Empowerment
Will hold a joint community meeting on Friday, Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nassau University Medical Center auditorium, located at 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow. The first guest speaker will be representatives from the Nassau County Board of Assessment, who will give a presentation on how to challenge county taxes, and will give details on what forms are necessary and explain how to prepare and file the grievance to challenges. The second guest speaker will be Veronica Murphy, a senior loan officer for a major mortgage service provide, to offer tips on how to save money on mortgages. Nassau-Suffolk Performing Arts
A talented group of student musicians, performs on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Tilles Center in Brookville. The Wind Symphony and Concert Band will perform at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall (the main stage) on February 6. The Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, will perform "An Evening of Jazz" at 8 p.m. at Hillwood Recital Hall on February 7.Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. Nassau-Suffolk Performing Arts is a non-profit organization founded in 1994 to provide talented
student musicians from across Long Island and the metropolitan area with additional rehearsal and performance opportunities in the jazz and concert band genres. Help Clarke 'Run with the Rams'
First Annual 5K Run with the Rams will take place on April 25 at Clarke High School. The event, sponsored by the Clarke High School Athletic Department, will include a 5K run and a 1-mile fun run. All proceeds will benefit Clarke's athletic program and charitable organizations. The East Meadow local lodge, Edward J. Speno Lodge No. 2568, are calling on Italians and Italian Americans to join the largest men and women organization in America, the Order of Sons of Italy in America. Crisis counseling
The Long Island Crisis Center offers 24-hour/seven-day-a-week crisis intervention counseling. Anyone who is depressed, needs help in controlling teenagers or wants to beat an addiction is encouraged to call (516) 679-1111. Calls are free and anonymous.
Help for smokers.
The Nassau County Department of Health, in collaboration with the New York State Smokers' Quitline, is sponsoring a program which offers four weeks of nicotine replacement therapy for smokers who want to quit. The therapy also known as "the patch" is available to medically-eligible county residents at no cost. Residents should call the New York Smokers' Quitline at 1-866-697-8487
