Village Board of Trustees
The next work session will be held on Monday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in the Village Hall board room. The next regular business meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room.
Arts and Crafts
The Valley Stream Recreation Department will be holding a winter arts and crafts program for children ages 5-10, and a woodworking program for children ages 7-12. Each eight-session program will be held on Saturdays, beginning Jan. 24, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Hendrickson Park administration building. The cost is $50. For more information call (516) 825-8570.
Movie at Village Hall

Exercise Program
The Valley Stream Recreation Department's exercise program at Fireman's Field begins on Feb. 2. The program consists 20, one-hour sessions on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. The focus of the class is to improve cardiovascular endurance, strengthen major muscle groups and increase bone mass. Town & County
Town of Hempstead
The town board will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St., Hempstead.
Legislature
The Nassau County Legislature will hold its next meeting on Monday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. in the legislative chambers, 1550 Franklin Ave., Mineola.
LIPA meeting
The Assembly Republicans will be holding a public hearing regarding the Long Island Power Authority on Friday, Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will take place at the Lynbrook Village Hall, 1 Columbus Drive.

Bookmark awards
The library will be honoring the winners of its Created Equal Bookmark Contest on Monday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. More than 250 entries were submitted from students of all ages. Bookmarks featuring the winning artwork will be distributed throughout the month of February 2009.
Young adult nights
The library will hold a youth video games night on Friday, Jan. 30. Games will include Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution and more. A teen Valentine's Day party will be held on Friday, Feb. 13. Both programs are open to students in grades 6-12 and begin at 6:30 p.m.
Valley Stream Book Club
"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini will be discussed at the book club's next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in the children's room.
Computer classes
The library will hold three computer classes on Saturday, Feb. 7. Internet Basics and Library Databases will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. A Microsoft Word Basics class is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and a class on Microsoft Excel Basics will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration is required.
Lego Exhibit
Lego creations by local children of all ages will be on display at the library throughout January in this 12th annual event.
Children's Room
There are a wide variety of programs scheduled for January 2009 with Children's Librarian Jaclyn Kunz including Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs and other seasonal events. Check the children's room calendar in the library or online at www.nassaulibrary.org/valleyst/

Homebound delivery service
Volunteers deliver books the homes of those with a disability or who are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. This service is offered weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed. All you need to do is complete a short application form at the adult reference desk.
Live homework help
Families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, have access to experts waiting to help through the library's Web site. Intermediate level classes are held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. This is not a beginner's class - you must have experience in playing the game.

The Board of Education will hold its next regular business meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Willow Road School.

The Board of Education will hold its next work session on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. followed by the regular business meeting at 8:30 p.m. Meetings are held at the William L. Buck School on Horton Avenue.

Holy Name of Mary School

Asthma program
A program on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hosted by Franklin Hospital's Respiratory Therapy staff, is held every Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room R37 of the hospital's radiology department. Chamber of Commerce
The Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce will hold its next networking meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at noon at Villa Marcello, 47 Franklin Ave. (between Cornwell and Emerson). George is Back will be held on Sunday, Feb. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Pagan-Fletcher Restoration.Valley Stream Historical Society members will be dressed in colonial costumes. Knights of Columbus
The Father Thomas Carroll Knights of Columbus will hosts its 11th annual youth Free Throw Championship on Saturday, Jan. 31. Braille Workshops

Musical performance
Members of Nassau-Suffolk Performing Arts will perform at Tilles Center at C.W. Post on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7. The Wind Symphony and Concert Band will perform at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall on Feb. 6. The Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, will perform "An Evening of Jazz" at 8 p.m. at Hillwood Recital Hall on Feb. 7. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
