Five Centuries of Art: Selections from the Permanent Collection
An exhibit that spans the breadth of Heckscher Museum’s Permanent Collection of paintings. Rediscovering Slobodkina: A Pioneer of American Abstraction
A retrospective that celebrates the 100th anniversary of Russian-American artist Esphyr Slobodkina’s birth. The exhibition will include works from the Heckscher Museum's extensive Slobodkina holdings, supplemented with works from the collection of the Slobodkina Foundation, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Abstract paintings, whimsical sculptures, and works on paper are included. Portrait and Landscape Show
Explores how portrait can reflect the land and culture of that person, and conversely, a landscape can portray a presence of a people, and can even symbolize an artist’s self-portrait. Robert Rauschenberg and His Contemporaries: Recent Prints from Universal Limited Art Editions
An homage to the artist, who died in May 2008. The exhibit features examples from Rauschenberg’s last print series, titled The Lotus Series, with imagery drawn from contemporary China, a favorite destination of the artist. Jasper Johns’ enigmatic style will be represented by many recent examples of his work. Two beautiful recent lithographs by Helen Frankenthaler will also be included . A photogravure by Chuck Close and a lithograph by James Rosenquist will be featured as well. White House Pets: Ambassadors at Large
The exhibit looks at the many ways in which animals have been part of White House history. It incorporates 50 historic and contemporary images and cartoons of White House animals through the years — from the magpie sent to Thomas Jefferson by the Lewis and Clark expedition, to George W. Life, Health and Death of Theodore Roosevelt
Mark Koziol, Park Ranger at Sagamore Hill presents an illustrated lecture on the Life, Health and Death of TR, Sunday Jan. 11, 1:30 and 3 p.m., to mark the anniversary of TR’s passing on Jan. 6, 1919. Koziol presents his findings showing that while the public impression of the 26th president was that of one who was robust and healthy, pursuing the strenuous life, TR had health issues that bothered him through his life and career and probably contributed to what some regard as a rather early demise at barely 60. seeks high school musicians in the classes of 2009-2010 to enter its 2009 Young Artists Award Competition. To qualify, students must play an orchestral instrument audition with a standard concerto. An accompanist is required. The winner receives $200 and will perform with the Orchestra on Saturday, June 13. Auditions take place Sunday, Mar. 22, at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F.
