Carey's girls basketball

The Lady Seahawks had Herricks right where they wanted after 32 minutes of regulation in last Friday's Nassau Conference AA-III game-tied. They allowed only one point in the extra session and emerged with a 47-40 victory, marking their third OT win in January and second in a row.
"We didn't play our best, but we shot well from the foul line and hit some clutch shots in overtime," coach Theresa Schmidt said. "I don't know if there's a level of comfort when we go into OT, but the extra four minutes has been good to us."
Senior point guard Nicole Sullivan never came off the court and finished with a game-high 17 points to go along with 10 assists. Senior Alison Tuohy added 11 points, junior Courtney Norell went 8-for-12 from the foul line and senior Ashley Kopsick came off the bench to score four points in overtime as Carey improved to 6-4 in conference play and 10-4 overall. Herricks, which scored 26 points in the second half after netting only 13 in the first two quarters, was led by Bridget McHugh's 14 points.
"I don't know the last time Carey had 10 wins before February," said Schmidt, in her third season at the helm. "This is the best team I've coached."
The previous Friday saw the Lady Seahawks escape Port Washington with a 44-35 overtime win. Sullivan had 17 points, including eight in OT, and Norell added eight points and 15 rebounds. Carey, which played without Tuohy and sophomore Nicolette Sands after both were injured in a collision during practice, scored 11 of the game's final 13 points after Port's Hayley Kerr forced OT with a buzzer-beating basket at the end of regulation.
The overtime heroics began on Jan. 15 when Carey stunned previously undefeated Bellmore-JFK, 60-58, to snap a three-game slide. Freshman Liz Osowiecki exploded for 18 points and 12 rebounds while Norell and junior Kerry Gilroy chipped in 11 points apiece. Gilroy also did yeoman's work defensively on Lady Cougar Ina Li, who had just six of her 19 points after halftime. "We changed our strategy in the second half," Schmidt said. "It's a win that not only snapped a losing streak but re-energized us. We're still the only team to beat Kennedy."
Bellmore-JFK (10-1) needs one win over its last three games to capture the conference championship and the Class AA playoff berth that comes with it. It hosts Carey on Monday in the regular-season finale at 7 p.m. Before that takes place the Lady Seahawks hope to avenge losses to Hempstead, East Meadow and Great Neck South.
"The girls have played well and they know there are certain things we can still do better," Schmidt said. "I think we're capable of beating the teams that beat us the first time. It would be nice if we can finish second."
