Summer beach concerts
The City of Long Beach’s free summer concerts are drawing to a close. The final concerts are the Daytrippers on Sept. 2 at New York beach and TBA on Sept. 3 at Neptune beach, both starting at 8 p.m.
Beach tennis
Beach Tennis USA® will hold its 2009 National Beach Tennis Championship in Long Beach on Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 5 and 6 at Riverside beach. To learn more about the great sport of beach tennis or to register to play, visit beachtennisusa.net.

Michelle O'Neill volleyball event
The Michelle O'Neill Foundation to benefit children with cancer and special needs is hosting their 13th annual volleyball tournament charity event on Sept. 12 on Grand Boulevard and New York Avenue beaches in Long Beach (The rain date is Sept. 13). Check-in is at 9 a.m. and the games begin at 10 a.m. You can play volleyball or watch. For a donation of $42 per person you receive a T-shirt/tank top, Outback Steakhouse grills hamburgers/chicken sandwiches, music, Kids' Tent (face painting/tattoos), merchandise tent, raffles and 50/50s.For more information or to pre-register for the event, visit www.monfoundation.org, or contact Carol O'Neill at 551-6092.
Parade of ships
The O’Keefe Foundation will hold its 6th Annual Spirit Rider Regatta on Sept. 12 in the Atlantic Ocean off Long Beach, between the Jones Beach Inlet and the East Rockaway Inlet. The Parade of Ships begins at 11 a.m. with viewing stand seating for the public on National Boulevard and the boardwalk in Long Beach.
Freedom flight
The 7th Annual Freedom Flight 9/11 Tribute will be held on Sept. 13 from 12 to 4 p.m. at Riverside beach. A special tribute is at 2:45 p.m. There will be a kiting exhibition, sand sculpting and live music and more.
Ronan Tynan in concert
Singer Ronan Tynan will perform at St. Mary’s Church, at 315 E. Walnut St., at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20. Tickets are $60 for general admittance and $125 for VIP, which includes a chat with Ronan after the concert over open bar drinks and hor d’oeuvres. For information and tickets call 432-0157.
Chamber hosts D.A. Rice
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice will be the guest speaker at the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce’s next meeting on Sept. 21 at Monterey Restaurant, at 20 West Park Ave., at 7p.m.
Bible art summit
The People’s Church of Long Beach, at 111 Delaware Avenue, will hold its fourth annual Bible Art Summit at 1 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 24. Any artist wishing to enter must bring their artwork between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., Oct. 23 before the event. No nudes allowed. Works of art must be taken from the Hebrew or Christian scriptures and be accompanied by a written paragraph of the story and the book in Bible it represents. For information call 431-3968.

New junior soccer league
A new soccer league for kids ages 6 to 8 has started in Long Beach. This is an inter-town league involving Long Beach, East Rockaway, Cedarhurst, East Meadow and Massapequa for Fall 2009. Flex and flow
Instructor Kyle Holder invites Long Beach seniors to join her on Friday mornings at 9 a.m. for a class of gentle stretching, bending, balance poses and breathing.
Music that makes you move
Movement to Music is an enjoyable way to exercise and feel better. This action-oriented program, led by instructor Lisa Wisel, is suitable for all seniors. Class sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

9/11 writing workshop
Dealing with the Unthinkable: This writing workshop will present works in poetry and prose about the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. After reading, we will be writing our own pieces. The workshop will be facilitated by Ellen Pickus, an award-winning teacher and writer. This event is a 2 p.m. on Sept. 11.
Music exhibit
The library will house an exhibit from the L.I. Music Hall of Fame celebrating artists, and educators from Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Kings Counties, until Sept. 14.
Jazz festival
The 7th Annual Long Beach Jazz Festival will be held at the library from Sept. 10 to Sept. 13.
Sociology course
Nassau Community College will offer Introduction to Sociology–Soc. 201, a 3-credit course, at the library. The class will meet for 14 sessions on Mondays, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. starting on Sept. 14 and ending on Dec. 21. For information visit www.ncc.edu.
Learn and practice meditation
Lisa Wisel will teach techniques that facilitate renewed energy by focusing on the breath and body sensation at 2:15 p.m. on Sept. 16.
Fitness for older adults
Magda Rosenberg, exercise physiologist, will conduct physical fitness routines for older adults. on Fridays starting at 9 a.m. It is recommended that you consult a doctor before beginning this or any fitness program.

John Daly swim
The City of Long Beach will host the annual John Daly One Mile Ocean Swim on Sept. 6 on National beach in Long Beach. Check in will be at 7:45 a.m., with the swim starting at 9 a.m. For information call lifeguard headquarters at 431-1810 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Adult exercise classes
The Rec is offering two courses for adults this Fall:a Yoga/Pilates Class and a Boot Camp, which will be held in the Teen Center (above the Ice Arena) on weekday evenings and weekend mornings.The registration fee for each class is $50 for City of Long Beach residents and $100 for non-Long Beach residents.
Cheerleader program
The Rec is accepting applications for a cheerleader program for children ages 7 to 10. Cheerleaders will practice once a week and meet on Monday evenings for games. Registration is $25.
Labor Day run
The 20th annual Robert C. McAvoy Labor Day Five Mile Run will be held at 8:30 a.m. on the boardwalk at Riverside Boulevard on Sept. 7.
Soccer program
The Rec is starting an eight-week instructional soccer program is offered to all 5- and 6-year-olds, which will be held every Friday through November. The Rec will hold an instructional soccer program starting at 5 p.m. on Sept. 10.
Volleyball program
The Rec is accepting applications for its Fall Volleyball Program. All games are played at Lindell School Monday through Friday evenings. The entrance fee is $500 per team with a mandatory captain’s meeting on Sept. 17 at the Rec Center at 7:30 p.m.


Fall soccer program
The Rec soccer program is open to Long Beach children ages 7-12. Registration is $25 and games will start on Sept. 22. Coaches are needed for all age groups, parents and former players.
Running club
The Rec is accepting applications for the fall running club for Long Beach boys and girls ages 7 to 15. The Club will meet every Sunday at 12 p.m. on Riverside Boulevard beginning September 20. The cost is only $25.
Women’s softball
The Rec is accepting applications for its Women’s Softball Program. Games will be double-headers on Sunday evenings starting at 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. The registration fee is $500. The League is scheduled to start on September 20.
Youth football
The Rec is accepting applications for the Youth Football Program. The Department offers a 5 & 6 year-old Division and a 7, 8 & 9 year-old Division. The players will be taught the basic fundamentals of football in a safe and friendly atmosphere.
