Dancing for a cause

The teachers, Bill Chiofalo, Dolores Decabo, Meryl Goodman, Sarah Henyan, Susan Kromol, Katie Mark, Gina Peck and Nancy Rickman have been attending weekly dance lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studios for several months. They've been working along with their dance instructors, perfecting technical skills and developing ballroom dance routines for the Ed Foundation gala on March 7 that has a "Dancing with the Teachers" theme.
"It's like ABC's hit show 'Dancing with the Stars' but with a twist," said Heather DeTommaso, gala co-chair. "Teachers representing each school in the district will 'star' in a ballroom dance exhibition at the gala. Everyone will be cheering for their school and it promises to be a memorable event."
Throughout the evening dinner dance, which will be held at the Hempstead Country Club, teachers will perform a variety of ballroom dances with their professional dance partners.
"My instructor Roman Makarov, a competitive dancer from the Ukraine, insists I learn everything with precision and accuracy," said Katie Mark, South Side Middle School's orchestra leader. "I have to be honest, though I'm having a great time, it's a lot harder then I expected!"
"I'm having the time of my life," said Sue Kromol, a middle school English teacher. "Dancing the tango with a tall, handsome man at the end of a school day is a lovely thing to do. My instructor, James, is patient and encouraging and he makes me feel secure on the dance floor. I've been ballroom dancing with my husband for years, but certainly not at this level. I'm thinking about continuing private lessons this summer. Thanks for this opportunity to fulfill a fantasy!"
In keeping with the fun, Covert school Principal Darren Raymar will emcee the evening's dance entertainment with Covert teacher Susan DeRosa. Raffles and silent auctions are also planned. "With the impending budget cutbacks, it's even more important [this year] to support the gala," said Patty Kriss, President of the Rockville Centre Education Foundation. "All the money raised goes directly to fund special programs in the district schools through teacher grants." Last year's gala funded close to $20,000 of those grants. Included were several Smart Boards at the middle and high schools, a library homework program, a middle school ESL Karaoke program and the high school "Composer in Residence" series. "We're always looking for innovative programs to bring to the district," said Kriss. "If a teacher has an idea, please don't hesitate to apply for a grant - we'll help you fill out the grant application. It's very easy"
This year the foundation will honor South Side High School Principal Dr. Carol Burris and Mathew Kakis, the owner of Mormile Florist.
