Blaze destroys Oceanview Road home

Seeing flames erupting from the side of the house, the officer who police will idenitfy only by his last name, O-Connor first called 911, and then repeatedly rang the doorbell and banged on the door to try to awaken the family inside. With O-Connor-s assistance, the Armendinger family two adults and three children ages 13, 15 and 17 made it our safely. All of the occupants were out of the house by the time The East Rockaway Fire Department arrived at the scene at 7:05 a.m.
First Assistant Chief Ed Reicherter was first on-scene and transmitted a Signal 10 working fire. there was heavy fire on the exposure two side of the house, he said, and thick smoke emanating from the attic eves. In addition to initial visible exterior fire, he said, the main body of fire was in the attic and began to vent through the roof.
Though there was extensive water and fire damage, Reicherter said, the aggressive interior attack by [my department] facilitated the quick knock-down.
There were approximately 100 firefighters and rescue personnel at the blaze, including mutual aide from the Lynbrook, Rockville Centre and Oceanside Fire Departments. The fire was declared under control at 8:07 a.m. One firefighter received a minor injury that was treated at the scene. The house sustained extensive damage. There was also slight damage to the house and auto next door.
The fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Office of the Fire Marshal, Reicherter said. Their preliminary findings were that the fire was not suspicious.
